Overall rank/citation overlap rose from 32.3% to 54.5% over that window, jumping to 39.1% within two months of Google AI Overviews' September 2024 public rollout. Question-and-answer formatting correlates with citation almost as strongly
The same Semrush analysis found a 25.45% correlation between AI citations and content structured as direct question-and-answer pairs, headings phrased as the buyer's actual question followed by a direct, front-loaded answer, rather than a marketing headline followed by three paragraphs of throat-clearing before the point.
None of these four figures is a ranking factor Google ever published or scored the same way. Classic SEO rewards a page for matching a keyword and accumulating authority over time. This data suggests AI engines are instead asking, in effect: can I lift a clean, sourced, well-organized answer straight out of this page in the next half-second? A page can rank well and still fail that test if its real content is buried in unstructured prose.
Does optimizing specifically for GEO actually move the needle, or is it just theory?
The measured evidence says yes, on both ends of the research. The Princeton/Georgia Tech paper that defined the discipline measured a real lift from applying GEO techniques (cited above, up to 40%). We won't dress that up as more than it is. Do I have to throw out my SEO work and start over?
